Election Day was never something that I took really seriously until this year, I'll admit it. The first year I could vote was the 2000 election between George W. Bush and Al Gore. I had just turned 18 two months prior, and I suppose my sights weren't really set on anything political. That, and I was on bed rest from having hip surgery the week prior. Thus, I didn't vote.
In the 2004 election, I still didn't take a great interest in politics. All I really remember was all of the JibJab cartoons that my ex showed me (which were HILARIOUS!), and that I just really didn't like John Kerry. Nevertheless, I took my one-year old to the polls with me, waited in line for over an hour, and cast my vote. (As a side-note....I remember going with Annalee to get our hair colored that night. Good times!)
This year was very different. I recall watching the Republican debates a year ago, and being disgusted with McCain. Didn't really pay much attention to the Democratic ones then, and put all of the election stuff on the back burner in my mind. Zuke would keep up on some of the issues, and fill me in here and there. My interest was not majorly peaked until the Vice Presidential debate a couple months ago. I won't get into all of my opinions on it, but that debate definitely swung my vote a certain way. I started to read up on the issues, not to mention all of the rumors, and actually found my own strong opinions on certain things.
This afternoon, I went down to the polling place and voted. I got extremely lucky, and didn't have to wait in line at all. Zuke, however, had a bit of a different experience early this morning, which you can read about here. I walked out of there extremely proud of my "I Voted" sticker that was on my shirt. Not just because I took ten minutes out of my day to do it, but because I actually have reasoning behind who I voted for. I did the research, and formed my own opinions. And that, in itself, feels good.
